Marijuana flower is the most well-known type of weed. However, concentrates are becoming one of the most popular products in the industry. Concentrates are created by extracting cannabinoids from the plant. They can be consumed via wax vaporizer pen cartridges – canisters filled with weed-oil. Wax pens may be a good option for those that want the increased high concentrates offer without the health concerns that come with combustion.

Why would you smoke from a wax cartridge?

Smoking allows the user to consume a more potent product due to the plant materials that are saved during the extraction. This means you get a more complete plant profile with more benefits than if you were to smoke a regular bud. Consuming this way can provide not only a better high, but can also offer more powerful and fast relief of certain ailments.

Positives: Less carcinogens, discrete, convenient

While smoking cannabis is still the most popular method of consumption, it has begun to slowly decrease in popularity. With legalization and increased consumer knowledge, research and scientific study into cannabis has expanded. Studies have shown marijuana has a bevy of benefits ranging from anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic, analgesic, neuroprotective and anti-proliferative. As such, more stock is being put into how individuals can reap these benefits will also consuming in the healthiest way possible.

Advantages of vaping: What is a wax pen?

Vaporizors utilize convection to increase the temperature in the air around the weed to ensure it is warm enough to become vapour while not growing hot enough to burn the product and thus release carcinogens. Moreover, the decreased temperature is less harsh on the throat and lungs. Lastly, you can still get a solid and powerful high when using wax cartridges.

If you are concerned with discretion, vaping with wax cartridges are a fantastic option because it requires fewer materials to consume compared with other methods such as dabbing that need a blow torch as well as a rig. Vape pens are much smaller and can be concealed in your purse or pocket, while also providing minimal if any odour.

Wax cartridges are also very convenient. All that is required is that you mount the cartridge on to the vape pen, push a button and you are ready to go. This method is generally much easier to reliably dose your hit in order to ensure you are inhaling an appropriate amount.

Negatives: Short lifespan, decreased flavour, expensive

One drawback of using vape pens is that the effects do not last as long as the effects of ingesting marijuana. This is because cannabis that is absorbed via the digestive system takes longer to take effect than when it is absorbed through the pulmonary system. However, vaping can result in a faster high though it will likely dissipate in a few hours.

Due to concentrates being heavily processed, the final product often has less flavour (assuming it has not been infused with additives). This is because the terpenes that have a large impact on the flavour and smell are volatile and are commonly lost while being extracted.

If money is a concern, it is important to note that concentrates are more expensive than flower – especially when it comes to wax cartridges. The price can be a fifth more than the cost of one gram of bud. The upshot, of course, is that concentrates are longer lasting due to their elevated potency.

The unfortunate truth

Marijuana laws have been passed in more than half of the United States legalizing medicinal and/or recreational use and the trend is set to continue. While this is good news, the unfortunate truth is that weed is still illegal at the federal level. And federal prohibition makes regulation by agencies that protect consumers and the environment from solvent residue, pesticides and other potentially harmful cultivation practices more challenging.

Practices that require regulation include extracting concentrates from old or moldy weed plants using butane that contains toxins. The oil from this procedure is then subsequently “purified” before being sold. There is no singular standard applied in the purification process so the results can vary greatly. The lack of research into the purification process means the potential side effects are largely unknown.

The residual solvents are far from the only substance scientists are worried about. The additives used to thin out oils and provide additional flavour are also a concern. Jahan Marcu from Project CBD contends that propylene glycol, which is common in marijuana and nicotine vape cartridges, poses a threat when converted into polymers as the vape pen reaches a higher temperature.

While there are some clear advantages to using vape cartridges, it is crucial to be mindful of the product you are buying to ensure you remain safe and healthy as the battle for legalization continues.
