There are many methods you can use for making cannabis tea. All the different ways include a variety of ingredients that can be modified to suit your personal preferences.

Cannabis-infused tea methods

You can make your own weed tea by simply infusing dry flowers and water. This method will give you a less psychoactive brew because THC is soluble in water. You can also create an infusion of cannabis and fat, for the fat, you can use butter, coconut oil and/or dairy. You will then need to combine the cannabis and your chosen fat with tea leaves and water, this makes a drink similar to a latte. Alternatively, you can mix tea and an alcohol-based extraction, such as a cannabis tincture.

The unfortunate truth is that making cannabis-infused tea that provides a wide range of medicinal and psychoactive effects is not as simple as you might have imagined. THC extraction can be a bit tricky because of solubility and decarboxylation factors. Do not worry too much about it too much, the good news is once you comprehend a few simple concepts, you’re good to go!

THCA (the non-intoxicating compound) is converted to the compound THC during the process of decarboxylation. This conversion activates a range of medicinal and psychoactive properties (feel free to find out more about THCA’s unique medicinal properties here). The heat that is applied to cannabis when you vaporize or smoke it provokes the decarboxylation process without any extra effort from you. When you make cannabis edibles, the decarboxylation process occurs naturally as the cannabis is cooked with butter or oils.

If you decarboxylate your weed using a heating method before adding it to tea, it is important to keep in mind that the optimal temperature and time for decarboxylation varies depending on the following factors:

  • How much product you use
  • The amount of moisture in your product
  • The type of oven you use (e.g., gas or electric)

How do you decarboxylate cannabis?

We have provided two great recipes that you can use to make the perfect cup of cannabis tea to cozy up to. The first recipe is for cannabis-infused golden milk. The golden milk has medicated coconut oil that has anti-inflammatory properties and is naturally rich in antioxidants. It is an ideal beverage for winding down after a long day or week. The second recipe is for cannabis-infused tea with chamomile and rose. This recipe can be modified in so many different ways. You will simply need to use the tea leaf or flower of choice accompanied by ground cannabis. It’s that easy!

Cannabis golden milk with medicated coconut oil

Serves 1

  • Preparation time: 5 minutes
  • Cooking time: 20 minutes

Note: the dosage will depend on how potent your cannabis coconut oil is. Depending on your weed tolerance level, you can add more or less.

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1” piece of fresh unpeeled turmeric, thinly sliced or 1⁄2 a teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • ¼ of a teaspoon of whole black peppercorns
  • 1 ½” pieces of unpeeled ginger, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon medicated coconut oil
  • 1 cup almond milk, unsweetened
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • The ground cinnamon, for serving

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the water, turmeric, peppercorns, ginger, almond milk, honey and cinnamon.
  2. Bring the mixture to a low boil.
  3. Lower the heat then add the medicated coconut oil.
  4. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  5. Strain the mixture using a fine-mesh sieve.
  6. Serve with a dash of cinnamon sprinkled at the top.

Cannabis tea with chamomile and rose

Serves 1

  • Preparation time: 5 minutes
  • Steeping time: 5-10 minutes

Note: The dosage will depend on how potent cannabis is. Depending on your weed tolerance level, you can add more or less weed.

  • 2 teaspoons of ground cannabis buds, trim or stems
  • 2 teaspoons of dried chamomile
  • 2 teaspoons dried rosebuds
  • 2 cups hot water
  • ½ cup of coconut milk (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of cannabis-infused honey (optional)

You can decarboxylate your dried weed beforehand or not, depending on whether you want the benefits of THCA or THC. Add the cannabis grounds, dried chamomile and dried rosebuds to a tea infuser. Steep the infusion in hot water for about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how strong you like your brew. Add coconut milk and/or cannabis-infused honey to suit your taste.
