U.S. media keep pushing stoner stereotypes

We may be in the Great Age of Legalization, but media in the U.S. still reach for harmful stereotypes when it comes to cannabis use.
According to a study of American news networks, it’s happening even in places like Colorado where cannabis use has been normalized and legal since 2013.
News media depict pot users as lazy or criminal, the study found. They also continue to rely on racial stereotypes about cannabis use.
The authors write that “ready-made images of what marijuana users are supposed to look like are being reinforced.”
The media is doing little to debunk these myths, the report says. And that’s even as more Americans “begin to acknowledge the false propaganda and exaggerations associated with marijuana’s history.”
