South Africa could be the first African nation to legalize weed
And they’re aiming to do it by addressing a big issue at the same time: racial discrimination
By Kieran Delamont
For the longest time, South Africa carried over the official prohibitionist attitudes and laws of their colonial past.
Until last year, when the country’s high courts decriminalized cannabis and told the government they had two years to figure out a better way to regulate weed.
Cannabis activists in South Africa have been working on refining what they say will be the most progressive cannabis legalization regime on the planet. A crowdsourced proposal, which is publicly available to anyone who wants to read it, has been guiding that effort. And it’s aiming to regulate the existing cannabis economy to address one big issue at the same time: racial discrimination.
