Republican Senate leader “Cocaine Mitch” McConnell semi-secretly visits a grow-op
McConnell’s camp is remaining hush-hush about the visit to a weed facility in California

Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell has long been bad news for fans of legal weed. He’s a staunch opponent.
So it is a little surprising that, on a recent trip to southern California, that he toured a weed facility.
McConnell’s camp is remaining hush-hush about the visit, which appears designed to let weed execs pitch him on the idea of calling a vote on the SAFE Banking Act, which would allow banks into the weed biz. (Never let a good lobbying opportunity go to waste.)
But of course, hypocrisy abounds here. The man they call “Cocaine Mitch” – allegedly over family ties to a shipping company caught with 40 kilos of coke on one of its ships – has expressed some extreme views on weed during his Machiavellian career.
Here are a few of his greatest hits:
- Marijuana causes “death,” McConnell said in 2012.
- Last year, McConnell spiking an effort to let weed companies have access to the banks.
- In 2018, McConnell also described cannabis as hemp’s “illicit cousin which I choose not to embrace.”
- And here’s that story about the 40 kilos of coke.
Oh, how times change.
