Four U.S. governors got together last week to plan a coordinated push to legalize cannabis across the northeastern United States.

The governors of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania met Thursday to align their legalization efforts. The idea is to harmonize laws. But, if successful, the region would rival the West Coast for the largest territory for legal weed in the United States.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called the effort “probably one of the most challenging issues that I know I’ve had to address in the state of New York.”

Nothing concrete was decided at the meeting. The content was mostly boilerplate legalization stuff around taxation and safety regulations. But there were no major surprises, either. And that’s welcome news for legalization advocates. They seem to have the political establishment on their side more often these days.
