Elon Musk’s blunt hit heard around the world
It also cost U.S. taxpayers $5-million

It was the puff heard around the world.
Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, hit a blunt while on Joe Rogan’s podcast. It was a pretty pathetic hit and made for great material for meme makers. It also cost American taxpayers $5-million.
Because SpaceX is a federal contractor in the United States, NASA ordered a review of corporate culture and employee training after Musk’s marijuana moment. The review includes “educating its employees and ensuring they are following strict guidelines barring illegal drug use.” NASA also agreed to pay for it.
Musk has enjoys security clearance with NASA that includes a condition that he not use illegal drugs. Cannabis is still prohibited federally stateside.
NASA defended paying for the training (which it notably didn’t make to other companies asked to perform a similar review) as a way to ensure the public doesn’t lose trust. Don’t want people to think there are baked astronauts flying around in space.
“As an agency, we’re not just leading ourselves but our contractors as well,” NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said. “We need to show the American public that when we put an astronaut on a rocket, they’ll be safe.”
