Cannabis companies donate supplies to combat COVID-19

If you’re the type of person who looks for the silver lining when the sky is filled with the darkest of clouds, consider that a crisis often brings out the best in humanity.

This goes for businesses, as well. We have already seen how some brewers and distillers are using their facilities—and their alcohol—to make that much-needed commodity during the COVID-19 pandemic, hand sanitizer.

Cannabis producers are doing their part as well.

With hospitals facing dire shortages of personal protection equipment (PPE)—including face masks and gloves—cannabis producers are stepping in to help with donations. After all, they use a lot of the same gear in their growing rooms to protect the plants from contamination.

BNN Bloomberg reports that Canopy Growth, which shut down two massive greenhouses in B.C. earlier this month, has donated thousands of gloves, Tyvek suits, and masks to front-line medical staff at a local health unit in Victoria.

Other businesses across North America are also helping out:

  • In Santa Rosa, California, CannaCraft has converted a portion of its production space to make individual bottles of hand sanitizer
  • The Honolulu-based Aloha Green Holdings is producing 1.7-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer, which it is offering for free to card-carrying medical-marijuana patients
  • WeedMD Inc. is switching to alternative face masks and will donate its supply of N95 masks to southwest Ontario hospitals
  • Hexo has donated 150 N95s to paramedic services in Quebec

In addition, New Brunswick cannabis producer Organigram announced on Twitter that it is donating 500 liters of ethanol from its facility to be repurposed into hand sanitizer for the local health-care community:
