In order to ensure that the whole state doesn’t catch on fire (again), California is proactively shutting down large swaths of its power grid for a week. The planned shut-off, which took effect last Wednesday (October 9), was in response to fears high winds forecast for the state would knock down live power lines. The whole point is to try to contain wildfires, which now devastate the state with increasing regularity.
The shut-off covers the so-called Emerald Triangle, where a ton of the U.S.’s legal (and illegal) weed is grown. And that’s putting weed growers in a serious pinch. It’s harvest season, so having no power could cause a major shortage of weed later on down the line. The fear is that the shutoff will also damage crops. Fans of illicit market weed aren’t going to be immune (though one imagines they will figure something out).
