Rolling the perfect joint is a captivating experience. Not only can it become an art form, but the better you do, the better the high is. No, really! Let’s get right into it.

Rolling a joint is arguably the best way to consume cannabis. We say “arguably” because, of course, the best way to consume cannabis is a highly subjective thing. A joint, we would argue, ensures that you taste each and every bit of your favorite strain, and that you feel every effect, regardless of how weak or strong. Here at CannCentral, we believe everyone who uses cannabis should know how to roll a joint. Moreover, we are fully aware that not everyone possesses this knowledge. For those who don’t, we’ve put together this quick DIY guide. It’ll take you through the process of rolling a joint. It’s not the arcane alchemy you might think it is; it’s actually quite simple.

The material/supply phase

First things first. You’re going to need to collect some essential items. First of all, you want to choose your favorite strain, and then go get it. This is the most important item here. If you don’t have weed, you can’t smoke weed!

Secondly, you’re going to need to gather some rolling papers. If this is your first try we recommend getting more than one sheet, just in case you screw up the first time. (If you do, no worries. It happens to the best of us, and look on the bright side—you’ll have something to learn from.)

Thirdly, you need to obtain a crutch for the filter and/or the joint crutch. (If the term “crutch” has you mystified, please consult CannCentral’s own Encycloweedia for a definition.)

Last but not least, you’re also going to need to get a cannabis grinder.

Step 1—Take your grinder and grind up your cannabis!

The first thing you want to do is take your cannabis and grind it up as fine as possible. The finer it is the better it will burn, and the better it burns, the better it tastes, smells, and feels. In order to break down your weed very well, we recommend you let it dry out beforehand. If you don’t have a grinder, it’s not the end of the world, it’s just a little trickier. In the absence of a grinder, you can use a knife or scissors to turn the weed into as fine a shake as possible.

Step 2—Time to create the filter and/or crutch!

If your rolling paper doesn’t include the materials to create a crutch, we recommend making one out of cardboard or old business cards. For the purposes of this article, we’ll be discussing the materials rolling papers usually provide you. You’re going to want to make some accordion folds at one end of your crutch material. Once you’ve made the folds, roll the crutch until it’s about the size (i.e., girth) you want your joint to be.

Step 3—Time to fill your joint up with cannabis!

Take your rolling paper and place the crutch on one end. Fill the rest with your cannabis (which by now you will have turned into shake using a grinder or an alternative grinding method). When you have done filling it, you can begin to slowly roll the joint between your fingers. In doing so, you’re effectively beginning to give the joint some shape.

Step 4—Time to pack your joint!

For this step, you’re going to want to take your joint, and pinch it between your fingers. Roll it between your fingers until the marijuana inside the rolling paper settles down and effectively assumes its final form. Once you’ve done this, you are going to want to take the unglued side of your rolling paper, and tuck it into the joint.

Step 5—Time to finish your perfect joint!

All you have to do for this final step is to pack the end of your joint! Most people use a pen or a similarly sized object. Most people (us included) recommend that you twist the end of your joint. This allows it to burn steadily and smoothly from the very beginning.

Final thoughts

Congratulations, you just rolled your first joint! Possibly even a perfect joint. Now go get high!
