Thinking about taking your first steps into cannabis cultivation and ordering some seeds? Whether you’re planning to grow Quebec Blue, Candy Kush, or White Widow, chances are you have some questions. For instance, perhaps you’re wondering just how long those cannabis seeds will stay fresh and healthy.

If so, read on…

Unfortunately for new growers, the world of cannabis can be quite confusing. There’s so much information out there, and contradictions do exist. Some people say marijuana seeds will only last for about six months before they go bad. Others will say that’s preposterous and that they’ll last years if stored the correct way.

Regardless, a newbie may not know who to believe. Is it worth trying to preserve them? Or will it be a waste of time since they’ll just die in half a year anyway? Fortunately, science has stepped in to help out. Turns out, both are true! If a strain with relatively weak genetics is preserved, it may not last longer than six months. However, if you preserve a strain with strong genetics, it absolutely can last longer than a year.

Are cracked seeds any good?

Unfortunately, once a seed has been cracked it will no longer germinate. This is because all of the precious genetic material that was stored inside the seed has been contaminated and devalued. In order to prevent this from happening in the future, many growers take their seeds and store them in cotton-stuffed jars. This way they won’t move around, and they won’t bounce back and forth off of one another.

Storing seeds in a cool and dark environment is an excellent way to increase how long they last as long as humidity levels are low. You also won’t want any potent scents within the general vicinity of your seeds.

How long will seeds last?

There really isn’t a definitive answer for just how long a cannabis seed will last. It’s largely up to you and how you care for them. Taking the jar-and-cotton approach will extend how long they last, but only if no humidity or potent smell becomes overwhelming. You can also store seeds in your fridge in order to increase their shelf life, but even that is a very temporary extension.
