In the history of cannabis use within the marijuana community, there’s no definitive answer as to where the term “nug” is derived from. And while the term has most certainly become firmly ingrained in cannabis culture, a fair guess explanation is that “nug” is an abbreviated term for “nugget”.

Originally this was traditionally associated with gold miners prospectors panning for gold. Nugget was used to describe a chunk of gold that they had found. However, over time the term nugget expanded to include small lumps of other substances, including cannabis.

Nug is a term adapted by the cannabis industry to refer to the buds obtained from the cannabis plant. They are the smokable part of the colas that are frequently referred to as flower. The term is also used as a slang reference to high-quality, top notch cannabis.

With the inclusion of describing the size and shape of the cannabis flowers, nug can also refer to the quality of cannabis. Nug is a term cannabis consumers typically use to describe buds of high-quality cannabis. The opposite of nug is “schwag,” or poorer, inferior, low-quality cannabis.

Nugs comprise the larger colas on the cannabis plant and have a comparative density of trichomes far greater than leaves and stems or stalks. After the cola is harvested, the nugs are extracted and manicured to clear away any undesired leaves or stems that might be attached. Dried, cured nugs are then sold for consumption.

Nug is a slang term used within the marijuana community for a knob of the bud material of high-quality cannabis. It’s a shortened form of “nuggets”, and refers to the way pieces of bud look once they have been removed from the marijuana plant, dried and cured.

A nug run is the term used to describe higher-quality concentrates, such as hash oil which are made from just nugs. So instead of using trim material to create the concentrate, only cannabis flowers are used. By only using the cannabis flowers, the product is infused with a cleaner flavor and more intense aroma than trim-run concentrates, as well as much higher concentrations of trichomes and terpenes.

Use of Term

Look at the number of perfectly shaped nugs I have here. It’s been a while since I’ve seen this good of weed.
