CBN or cannabinol, is a minor cannabinoid known to be found in older cannabis and is only mildly intoxicating for the user. It is mostly present in older cannabis because it is created as THC ages. There hasn’t been a whole lot of research on CBN in comparison to the more major cannabinoids, but there are a few. In one study, CBN was tested on a particular strain of bacteria that was resistant to regular antibiotics.
Researhces noted that CBN was fairly potent against the more resistant strains. This led researchers to hold the idea that it may be useful in the future for antibiotic resistant issues. In one rodent study, researches found that CBN in rats was an affective stimulant for appetite. The rats ate food at a larger rate than those that weren’t administered CBN.
Early stages in research on patients that suffer from glaucoma suggested CBN may be beneficial in reducing the pressure. One rodent study pointed to a potential link for CBN reducing the pain of arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties. There hasn’t been much research done on the sedating effects of CBN, but one neurologist has stated that pure CBN itself is not really sedating, but that the terpenes found in the older cannabis is what can potentially create the sedating effect that user might experience.
CBN in itself is not an intoxicating substance to anywhere near the same level that THC is. But it is said that CBN can actually create a more euphoric high when it is used in conjunction with THC. It can be fairly tricky to get your hands on CBN because it is usually only found in the older cannabis or cannabis that has been exposed to a lot of oxygen over a period of time.
