According to a survey of sports fans in the United States, fans of ESports and UFC are the most likely to consume cannabis.

The market-research firm Morning Consult polled between 252 and 1,269 self-identified fans of each of 14 different sports. According to Morning Consult, the margins of error ranged from 3 to 6 percentage points.

What did the survey find? Turns out that 35 percent of ESports fans reported often or sometimes smoking or ingesting marijuana. The same percentage of UFC fans reported using weed as well. The survey also asked participants about CBD. It found 29 percent of ESports fans and 27 percent of UFC fans saying they used cannabidiol products.

Fans of MotoGP and F1 were also among the likeliest to use cannabis or CBD products.

CBD sponsorships

Morning Consult noted that IndyCar “signed off on one of the first CBD sponsorships in major American sports last year”. The motorsports organization allowed the Carlin team to partner with the company Craft 1861.

The PGA Tour allows golfers to promote CBD isolate and broad-spectrum CBD. However, “stick-and-ball” sports leagues like the NHL and NBA are more reluctant to allow CBD sponsorships.

A key barrier is that top-tier sports leagues’ collective bargaining agreements prohibit players from using cannabis products. While that didn’t deter IndyCar—CBD is on the banned substance list for its drivers—most leagues aren’t comfortable promoting something they aren’t willing to let their athletes use.
